Self-love is all about what I call the “choose me” moments. It’s not splurging on a new wardrobe, heading to the spa, or going on a lavish vacation (although, those are wonderful too), but rather making small daily acts that say ‘I am the most important, so what do I need from me right now?’
Here are 10 easy-to-implement “choose me” moments you can create for yourself every day:
- ποΈ Make your bed: this one seems so simple it’s almost silly, but it’s been scientifically proven that making your bed upon waking up puts you in a productive frame of mind.
Your inbox can wait. - π¦ Hydrate: optimal brain function, proper cleansing, and optimal cell function make for a mind that’s clear and a body that’s full of energy. Plus, adding fruit like kiwi or citrus is a great way to sneak in extra vitamins.
- π§ Peace and Quiet: Quieting your mind for a few minutes everyday releases any resistance you might have had lingering from the day before. It’s a peaceful start to a balanced day.
- π Set your intention: This doesn’t have to be grand, it can simply be “I’m going to meet any challenge that comes my way today with grace” β¬ οΈ intentions are a great way to use our conscious mind [ thoughts + feelings ] to influence our subconscious mind [ behaviour and habit ].
- ποΈ Get physical: even if it’s just taking a moment to do some therapeutic yoga stretches, or getting up from your desk every 15-20 minutes to walk around, moving the body releases feel-good chemicals (…and yes, sex counts!)
- π₯ Prepare a meal and enjoy it at the table: Sometimes your day consists of grabbing every protein bar or packaged food you can find, and chasing it down with coffee. Been there,
donestill do that. But if you have the time to be in your kitchen for even 15 minutes to prepare a fresh salad or hot meal, you give yourself the opportunity to step out of your busy day and take a #mindfulmoment that nourishes not just your body, but your mind too. - π΅ Take a screen-free break: Go outside, read a book, or just sit down and daydream – do anything to take your focus and attention off of your screen(s) and into being. Disconnection is so underrated.
- πͺ Treat yo’ self: I try to treat myself to one thing a day that’s just for me, whether it’s something to satisfy my sweet tooth, taking a bath, splurging on my fave specialty coffee, or dancing in the living room to a disco track – it’s something that’s just for me and a highlight of my day.
- ππ½ Practice gratitude: There is no better way to end your day and fall into a blissful sleep than taking a moment to list the things you appreciate. It’s the ultimate vibration-raiser! (just don’t forget to include your wonderful self on that list π)
- π€ Get to bed early: “one more email” or “10 more mins of scrolling” vs hitting the sheets when it’s lights out has never benefitted me. It’s our ‘always on’ mentality, and it is not productive or healthy – so, shut. it. down.
I know it can be difficult to do a lot of these things everyday. If you’re anything like me, life is bit crazy and unpredictable. If I’m being honest, some days I’m just trying to stay afloat, but if you can incorporate even a few “choose me” moments – whatever they may be (and not get upset with yourself if you don’t), that’s enough.
Just remember, you’re doing great.
